Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies
|
Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Re: Copyvio?
editYeah, it's moderately common for newcomers to just post stuff they've seen somewhere that they liked; our admin reasons-for-deletion menu includes "blatant copyright violation". --Pi zero (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 9 September 2018
Thanks for editing the wording here, Leaderboard. (I believe this may possibly need a re-write on Sunday in the case the attack is successful.) --Gryllida (chat) 10:45, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for tireless monitoring of recent changes, Leaderboard
editThanks for reverting numerous spam edits and marking pages for speedy deletion. Really appreciate it.
It's a pity that after being marked as spam, the default deletion reason no longer includes the nickname of the account which created it. I wish this was fixed. Filed T207136 - make the default deletion reason a bit smarter.
--Gryllida (chat) 08:42, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
- I have my eye on this as something for a dialog-based assistant to facilitate. --Pi zero (talk) 12:39, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. Is this in a wish-list somewhere now? --Gryllida (chat) 05:48, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
user page?
editIs there really a problem with that rather vague biographical paragraph being on their user page? It appears to be about the account owner. It doesn't contain external links. It doesn't name the businesses involved. Perhaps you're seeing a problem with it more clearly than I am? --Pi zero (talk) 17:09, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Pi zero: It is. This person has been dumping it crosswiki and has sock accounts (you blocked one of them and even revoked talkpage access), and actively reverts those who try to mark it for deletion. Leaderboard (talk) 17:43, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- Fair enough. --Pi zero (talk) 17:50, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
Aasi or Aasia
editYou have changed the name from Aasia to Aasi. According to sources the name is reported as "Aasia or Asia" even en-WP indicates (Aasia Bibi) her name "Asia". Now decide what the real name should be, and advise me, plz. Nannadeem (talk) 17:07, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Nannadeem: The UK based sources (eg: this one) tell the name as Asia, so I think you should change it to that. Also @Pi zero: Leaderboard (talk) 17:24, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

- Afaict, all the sources except Al Jaz use "Asia"; even the Pakistani sources use "Asia". So "Asia" should be a reasonable choice for us, and in fact anything else would require some good reason that currently isn't in evidence. --Pi zero (talk) 18:39, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

For tagging articles do you edit by hand? Here is a script if you don't have one: User:Gryllida/js/TagSpam.js
editTo install add this line to Special:MyPage/common.js:
importScript('User:Gryllida/js/TagSpam.js');
and look for 'tag spam' button on the page in the same section as 'What links here'.
--Gryllida (talk) 10:44, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: Ok, seems to work (even if it's a bit crude). Maybe make it a bit more interactive? Leaderboard (talk) 11:00, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
- What kind of interaction would you suggest to add? Gryllida (talk) 00:51, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

- Great idea, Leaderboard.
- The current version does this now -- without even reloading the page. (diff.) Gryllida (talk) 00:27, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Editing ORs
editORs can be easily identified by the title. They generally do not have {{editing}}--it is more of a personal choice. Best not to edit an OR while the AR is editing it. You can check the history in case of doubt.

- You are right; it's just me being lazy and using Gryllida's script to tag it in one click. Leaderboard (talk) 12:18, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Not sure if anyone showed User:Gryllida/js/TagTest.js, it seems not in your User:Leaderboard/common.js and it might be useful.
Wish you the best in advancing your technical and writing expertise at Wikinews and elsewhere. --Gryllida (talk) 00:47, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Gryllida:. From what I see it adds another option to tag it as a test page. I'll stick with Agastya's for now as it's a bit more flexible. Thanks for the help though. Leaderboard (talk) 11:23, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Loss of Pi zero Still unknown to many
editHi Leaderboard Just to let you know. I saw you contributed this to wn, so I thought I would bring this to your attention. Pi Zero had participated in many wmf wikis, but I am still running into pages that do acknowledge his loss to the wikimedia movement. Ottawahitech (talk) 23:36, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Ottawahitech:, thanks. is there something specific that I need to do? Leaderboard (talk) 08:00, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding and pinging me. There are a couple of things people can do (possibly more?):
- Use Template:deceased Wikimedian on both the User-page and the User-talk-page on wikis where Pi zero participated
- Write an obit for the Signpost Ottawahitech (talk) 15:38, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- Improve the photo displayed at Wikinews_mourns_loss_of_volunteer_John_Shutt, I have no idea how, but there are others at Commons who know how to perform this magic Ottawahitech (talk) 15:51, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Ottawahitech:
- The former is kind of optional - us at en.wikibooks didn't do that, just opted to use a standard warning template.
- The second is, well, out of my scope since I am not familiar with the Signpost. Leaderboard (talk) 15:39, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

editHey Leaderboard. Can you please explain the rationale for this? I am curious why it is null? Are you using any scripts for tagging? Is it broken?
103.48.104.124 (talk) 19:45, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- That's your deletion script I was using. I recall it happens when the deletion reason is blank, but can't reproduce it now for some reason. Leaderboard (talk) 19:49, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, if your prompt input is empty, the content selected will be null and that is what it will paste. Don't have it empty, or add a case to handle it. But again, what was your rationale?
103.48.104.124 (talk) 19:56, 10 May 2021 (UTC)- For this one? Actually I don't know, certainly does not look like the type of article I would usually tag for deletion. Leaderboard (talk) 19:57, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- I understand sometimes we end up tagging wrong article for deletion, or accidentally delete wrong page -- it is a bad experience when that happens -- but regarding this -- I had asked once on IRC and hours later, here. I feel that tagging might have chased off @EthanBiando: who might be trying to get started with the project. Please be very careful how you approach a newcomer's work vs tagging other articles for deletion. We do not want to be chasing people off by actions which can be interpreted as we don't welcome their contribution here.
•–• 04:07, 11 May 2021 (UTC)- @Acagastya: I think I figured out what happened. When you click the tag script, and then cancel it (for instance, if it was a mistake), instead of not doing anything, it simply tags with reason "null", as you can see. I think that's what could have happened - I clicked by mistake, and cancelled it, forgetting that the script still tags. Leaderboard (talk) 07:11, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

editThanks for the e-mail. I do not have the technical know-how to make a filter count the number of occurrences of a single character. I just add parameters to already existing filters. If you know the required code to create such a filter, please e-mail me the exact code and I can create and test it. If you don't know the coding required, consider sending the same mail (you sent to me) to Chaetodipus. He has experience in creating filters from scratch. Cheers, SVTCobra 18:43, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

Re: global sysops requests
editHi @Leaderboard
Requests like this, firstly thank you so much, it was deletionworthy page.
Could you please advise me how does it work? There are several local sysops available. I am one of them. I thought global sysops was only for emergencies.
Thanks, Gryllida (talk) 09:17, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Gryllida:,
- First: the policy changed recently - historically global sysops could not operate on this wiki at all, while stewards would operate only on emergencies. See Wikinews:Water_cooler/policy/archives/2024/June#h-Opt_in_global_sysops?-20240524165000 for the discussion on Wikinews where this policy was changed. The new policy is at Wikinews:GP which clearly state that global sysops and stewards can operate on this wiki (albeit with somewhat stricter conditions compared to the average wiki in theory).
- Secondly: there may be a few local sysops, but there was no one available to take care of the spam and vandalism for quite a while.
- Finally: I use the meta:TwinkleGlobal script as that allows me to easily flag a page to be deleted at meta:GSR (which you linked to above).
- Leaderboard (talk) 10:12, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- At the top of the global sysops requests page it says it's for wikis "with no active administrators". It was the case at time of the now archived water cooler discussion. Are you comfortable with local sysop availability now? Gryllida (talk) 10:23, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Gryllida: that isn't entirely accurate unfortunately - it needs to be removed. And no, I'm not "comfortable with local sysop availability now" and just because you're there does not mean that I think there's enough admin availability. A steward like @EPIC: might be able to comment further - in fact he commented on Wikinews:Admin_action_alerts that the wiki really needs new admins and that it's the global sysops/stewards doing all the admin work. Leaderboard (talk) 10:26, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- I suspect that it may continue to be done by global sysops if they handle the spam within 5 seconds whereas local admins, at the best of their days, could do it in 5 minutes. How can this dilemma be resolved? There is probably 1 in 1000 sysops who has such lightning speed, such quality of work is of course useful for global sysop, but may not be achievable nor required locally after months of recruitment efforts. Correct me if I am wrong. Gryllida (talk) 10:33, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: I don't get your point. "local admins, at the best of their days, could do it in 5 minutes" - when it's "at the best of their days" - that's not been the case on this wiki for years. If the admins were active the global sysops would indeed have nothing to do, and it's not a case of speed - they tend to be hesitant to act on wikis with many active admins. And we're at a stage where admins (who are inactive anyway) have to be begged not to give up their rights, which isn't good. Leaderboard (talk) 10:36, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, I think you understood it as it was part of your reply, here are a few thoughts,
- I am here and a couple local sysops.
- I have nothing to do at times, a global sysop deletes it while I am in middle of reading the spam.
- Have you previously applied for sysop here?
- You mentioned above you are not writing articles. What do you mean by that? What is your main interest in Wikinews?
- Who refuses to give up their admin bit?
- In general I agree the wiki is a bit slow, spam deletions being slow correlates with slow action on updating of permissions. I have article publishing to sort out before I review the permissions requests pending.
- Thanks, Gryllida (talk) 10:50, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida:,
- "I am here and a couple local sysops." who are almost pretty much inactive. You weren't active for months as well.
- "Have you previously applied for sysop here?" - yes I have, and I was refused because I didn't (and still don't) have reviewing/article-writing experience.
- "You mentioned above you are not writing articles" - indeed I don't write articles here. I'm just here mainly for anti-vandalism purposes, and occasionally taking part in community discussions.
- Just see some of the last permission removal requests (example: Wikinews:Flagged_revisions/Requests_for_permissions/Removal/William_S._Saturn). It's not about them "refusing" to give up rights, but more of the discussion surrounding it. In the average wiki, this is pretty much a formality - but here the discussion is surprisingly heated.
- Plus, a couple of additional points:
- one benefit of GS/stewards is that they allow you to focus on things such as "article publishing"
- "I have nothing to do at times, a global sysop deletes it while I am in middle of reading the spam" - this is misleading. Just compare this wiki with the deletion logs of my homewiki (en.wikibooks) or en.wikivoyage - both are wikis that allow (and encourage) global sysops. On both wikis, it's the local admins that do most of the deletion work, while it's the reverse on en.wikinews. It's because both wikis have multiple active admins that take care of the project.
- Leaderboard (talk) 11:02, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Previously before my absence I was confirtable checking and removing spam once a day in the evening. Now if I follow same thought, I get outraced. I am a bit worried in my best days I spent 30mins a day at most, not 24/7, and it was sufficient.
- It is flaggedrevs request, not admin. I am aware of it. Going to see what to do about the one article first, the permission handling can be decided afterwards. Gryllida (talk) 11:11, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: Wikinews:Requests_for_permissions/Administrator/Leaderboard was my unsuccessful admin request. And also: if there were multiple admins around, "checking and removing spam once a day" would be enough for you. Leaderboard (talk) 11:13, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Interesting.
- That's years ago
- Tagging spam articles is rather confusing, it breaks the edit summary which would otherwise say "and the only contributor was User:SpammerNick"
- What is the point of hanging around helping against spam, do you read the news published? Or copyedit other submissions? What makes this place interesting to you over wikihow, fandom, openstreetmap, etc
- I read only first paragraph so far, as it is late evening here, it mentioned site maintainance - this is good
- Would you be interested in training for reviewer? Do you find yourself good at copyediting texts elsewhere?
- Thanks, Gryllida (talk) 11:27, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: You're right that it breaks the "and the only contributor" part, but the context is otherwise clear. I may copyedit the odd submission or two, but otherwise I don't plan to work as a reviewer at this time - I focus on other areas (such as meta:Global reminder bot whose bot application is pending on Wikinews). However: I would like to become an admin for the sole purpose of reverting spam/vandalism if this is something you and the community is OK with. Leaderboard (talk) 12:22, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Greetings
editHi Leaderboard
I appreciate your work tagging pages for deletion and keeping things neat and tidy.
Does the bot have a page about it somewhere at Wikinews? Rights expiration happens here maybe once a year or something. It is not common. There are only 20+15 (reviewers + sysops) privileged users, and likely less as some users have both user rights.
I am looking for help with news writing:
- Please suggest me a link to something that happened today (from your news feed)
- I will write the news report for you, it will be very short just to get the main information and ask you questions if needed (as it may not be my main topic area)
- Repeat the same each two days for two weeks
Then in two weeks we can come back and think what to do next.
It is a 3-5 minutes each 2 days commitment. Are you interested? If so, please share today's interesting news that you noticed.
Regards, Gryllida (talk) 07:04, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida You mean meta:Global reminder bot? It does not have a page at Wikinews itself, but this bot indeed is expected to run rarely - it's just a required process I need to do for every wiki. Leaderboard (talk) 07:40, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
- Is there a request for the bot here at English Wikinews or is this not needed? Gryllida (talk) 07:45, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida Yes, there is a request for the bot. I don't need a bot flag, but I do need approval irrespective of how rarely it will run on this wiki (otherwise I need to disable it entirely on the wiki). Leaderboard (talk) 09:35, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

- Burned out this week so cannot do now, too much pain. Want to reduce reviewer's load, it will be reviewed by someone else as I am involved in editing. Gryllida (talk) 09:29, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- The time was deleted from article due to timezone confusion. I couldn't verify either. Anyway, inserting the UTC time is no longer needed here. Gryllida (talk) 10:18, 26 October 2024 (UTC)

- could you please consider joining WN:IRC my nick is gry

- @Gryllida You mean something like wikipedia:en:Template:Time? Yes it can be done for this wiki as well, but you need to import it. The problem however is the licensing - after all as per Wikinews:Copyright, you cannot copy text from Wikipedia into Wikinews as their licence conflicts with each other. I am not sure whether that applies to this as well. If you can import, this can be done manually, via Special:Import if that works from Wikipedia, or by requesting transwiki import. And apologies for not being there the previous day; I had other things to do. Leaderboard (talk) 10:57, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, I have no idea about copyright, I will ask in Wikipedia about it. Thank you. Gryllida (talk) 10:19, 26 October 2024 (UTC)

deleting
editthere are, say, 34 articles in a category for speedy deletion. is there a way to display a list with tick boxes and tick them all and delete in one go, without manually opening each page and clicking "delete" selecting reason then clicking "delete" again Gryllida (talk) 09:21, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida I'm not sure - let me ask this on Discord and get back to you. Leaderboard (talk) 09:27, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida Someone recommended "JS Wiki Browser" - have you tried that? Leaderboard (talk) 09:44, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: Add mw.loader.load( '//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:1234qwer1234qwer4/mass-tools.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' ); to your common.js. One of the tools is MassDelete, which allows you pasting multiple titles and deleting inputed pages. A09 (talk) 19:56, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- thanks i will check it out Gryllida (talk) 22:22, 11 November 2024 (UTC)

adminship
editi invite you to apply for adminship, i think this could work out well Gryllida (talk) 04:51, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, you can go ahead and nominate me in that case. Leaderboard (talk) 04:52, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- i think you can self nominate, easiest as i'm traveling and when i tried i ran into archived previous request with which i don't know what to do.
- i'm happy to add vote for support, it'll be less fighting with the software involved.
- you appear available and technically and otherwise competent for the role from my perspective.
- regards, Gryllida (talk) 04:58, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
