Click on the photo once or twice to zoom in - the barren patches of hillside in the distance consist of naturally-toxic soil developed on weathered serpentinite. Few plants grow in such soils; the few that do are usually rare species. Serpentinite is a low- to high-grade metamorphic rock dominated by serpentine, a group of magnesium hydroxy-silicate minerals - antigorite, lizardite, and chrysotile (Mg3Si2O5(OH)4). This rock forms by metamorphism of olivine-rich peridotite in the presence of water. See: www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/albums/72157694829360531 In the Alaskan landscape seen here, serpentinite and other metamorphics make up the bedrock - such outcrop belts are called ophiolites, which consist of obducted oceanic lithosphere. Obduction is the opposite of subduction - oceanic lithosphere gets pushed up and onto continental lithosphere, whereas normal subduction involves oceanic lithosphere diving deep into the Earth's mantle.
