English translation
[edit]I, Fra Jeronimus Munghofer of the Order of St. Benedict, confessor and penitentiary of the monastery and chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary that by the will of God has been consecrated at Einsiedeln in the Diocese of Constance, acknowledge that the worthy and honourable brothers Johannes and Oswald Bürgi have visited the said place and chapel, have confessed their sins to me in the form established by the Church and, after imposition of a salutary penance, have by the authority granted to me in this region by the Apostolic See been absolved. In witness whereof I have delivered the present document and marked it with the usual seal for such documents. Given in the year 1521, on the nineteenth day of the month of December.
Note: In spite of the heading, the document is not about an indulgence (remission of a penance), but is a certificate of having gone to confession and, after the customary imposition of a penance ("iniuncta paenitentia salutari"), having been absolved.
