From left to right: Cecil Coles (aged 16), Muriel (15), Frederick (with beard), Helen (20, seated), John (12, extreme right). Three workmen in centre. Coles' son Herbert (13) is not present. James Ritchie (Snr) (1850 - 1925) was an archaeologist and school teacher from Edinburgh. He was appointed headmaster of Port Elphinstone Public School, Aberdeenshire, in 1875. Details from a book, Some Antiquities of Aberdeenshire and its Borders (1927), written by his son James Ritchie (Jnr.) (1882 – 1958) was a Scottish naturalist and archaeologist, who was Professor of Natural History at the University of Edinburgh 1936–52 and President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 1952-1958.[1] |
