English: Marine Lt. Col. William Lietzau (left) and Army Col. Frederic Borch (right) participate in a press briefing in the Pentagon on May 22, 2003, dealing with military commissions. Lietzau, was the first military lawyer appointed to the position of acting chief prosecutor for military commissions. The Office of the General Counsel of the Department of Defense announced today that Col. Borch will be his replacement. In November 2001, President George W. Bush decided that enemy combatants taken into custody by the armed forces of the United States and charged as terrorists may be tried by military commissions. The President has not designated anyone stand trial by military commission, but it is deemed prudent to establish the framework for such a body should the need arise. |
