English: Typhoon Faxai struck Japan on the evening of September 8, 2019, becoming the strongest storm to strike Tokyo in recorded history. According to the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS), the maximum sustained winds peaked at about 213 km/h (132 mph) on early September 8, which would bring it to Category 4 strength. Typhoon Faxai was weakening when it made landfall just east of Tokyo late in the evening. It then moved over the central eastern coast of the island of Honshu before moving out over the North Pacific Ocean as it continued to weaken. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued the last warning on the system on the afternoon of September 9. At that time maximum sustained winds had dropped to about 52 mph (84 km/h).
According to media reports, three people have been reported killed by the storm with an additional 50 people injured. GDACS reported more than 14,000 people were stranded at Narita International Airport and 930,000 are without power. On September 9, 2019, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of Typhoon Faxai as it was approaching landfall on Honshu Island, near Tokyo. The storm sports a cloud-filled eye with tight circulation. Storm bands cover the island as the eye sits off the southeast coast. |
