Description |
English: Sextant, pocket compass, and refracting telescope lay on a piece of leather. A sextant was used to measure the angular distance between the moon and sun or a star, for determining longitude. The pocket compass was used to take bearings when it was impractical to use the circumferentor and when traveling on land. The refracting terrestrial telescope with an achromatic objective lens was used for daytime observations.
