Français : La famille Dionne compte déjà cinq enfants lorsque les quintuplés Dionne voient le jour, le 28 mai 1934. Elzire et Oliva Dionne élèvent leurs enfants sur une ferme située en Ontario. La famille est très pauvre et vit sans eau courante ni électricité. Le gouvernement ontarien place les jumelles en tutelle.Le fait que les jumelles soient identiques contribue à leur célébrité ; il est très rare pour des quintuplés d'être identiques. L'histoire des jumelles Dionne fait rapidement le tour du monde.Les jumelles sont prises en charge par une équipe médicale et deviennent rapidement des objets de curiosité. Profitant de la popularité des soeurs Dionne, les experts du monde médical en profitent pour promouvoir leurs techniques d'éducation. Le gouvernement en fait une attraction touristique. Les touristes peuvent voir les faits et gestes des jeunes jumelles à travers un grillage spécialement aménagé. L'école élémentaire, tenue par les Soeurs de l'Assomption, apporte un certain répit aux soeurs jumelles, moins exposées au public. À l'âge de seize ans, les soeurs Dionne retournent dans leur famille. La popularité des quintuplés a généré des revenus importants à l'époque, mais très peu pour les intéressées. Dans les années 90, trois des soeurs Dionne (les deux autres étant décédées) font des démarches et obtiennent une compensation du gouvernement ontarien. |
