Object history
English: Coat of arms of the Danish town Nykøbing Sjælland. The arms are based on a city seal from 1519 but probably dates from the 14th ventury. The meaning of the crescent is unknown. The name of the town means "new city" so a new moon crescent might be a canting symbol. The meaning of the stars is also unknown but stars can also be found in the seal of the surrounding hundred of Odsherred although no connection between the two arms has been demonstrated.
Dansk: Nykøbing Sjællands byvåben, baseret på et segl fra 1519. Symbolet stammer dog nok tilbage fra det 14. århundrede. Betydningen af halvmånen er ukendt, men en nymåne kan måske være et talende element. Stjernernes betydning er ligeledes ukendt. Der findes også stjerner i det omgivende Odsherreds segl, men det er uklart hvorvidt der er en forbindelse mellem de to symboler.
