Upload your pics through September under a free license. Give each photo a title that identifies the subject, and mention the site's registration in the description.

Wiki Loves Public Art & Cemeteries in Serbia (WLPAC) is a unique and significant initiative that combines two projects: "Wiki Loves Public Art" (WLPA) and "Wiki Loves Cemeteries" (WLC). This project is more than just a photo contest and editorial marathon; it serves as a bridge connecting public art and cultural heritage, creating synergy and providing a platform for a deeper understanding of culture, history, and society. Everybody can participate.

The competition lasts from October 15 to December 15. By sharing your photos under a free license, you help document our history and share it with the rest of the world to enjoy through the internet, and get a shot at winning a prize! We will explain below how to participate, what you can win and what monument sites are eligible.

If going out to photograph, be sure to 'take necessary health precautions and follow the guidance of national, and local officials.

Why participate?

Participating in the project "Wiki Loves Public Art & Cemeteries in Serbia" is an exceptional opportunity to actively contribute to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage. This project allows you to help preserve public art and grave markers that hold significant historical and cultural value through photography and content editing on Wikipedia. Your participation not only enriches the available information but also raises awareness about the importance of these cultural assets. By joining the project, you become part of an initiative that empowers communities, promotes cultural diversity, and takes a meaningful step toward the digitization of historical resources. Your work will help preserve and present historical and artistic treasures for future generations, which is not only important but also deeply rewarding.

Participating in the contest is a great way to experiment and discover which photos get the nod. You certainly don’t need to be a professional photographer to take photos that are valuable for Wikipedia. And did we mention there are valuable prizes for the winners?

Competition rules

There are a few rules for photos to participate in Serbia contest.

  • Photos must be your own work.
  • Photos may have been taken at any time (including prior to this event), but must be uploaded during October 15 to December 15 to be included in the contest.
  • During the upload process, you must release your photo under a free license that allows for re-use of the image (CC BY-SA license 4.0 or similar)
  • Photos must be uploaded through this link in order to be properly tagged for the contest (contributors who are familiar with the proper tagging procedures can manually tag their photos if they wish).
  • Photos must reflect the theme of the project.
  • Digital manipulations must not deceive the viewer. Correcting flaws, some color adjustments, and other minor edits are acceptable.

Next to that, there are a few practical rules:

  • You should have an activated e-mail address on Wikimedia Commons so that you can be contacted if you win.
  • If the photo gets deleted for any reason, it is automatically disqualified from the competition.
  • You are responsible for following the law while taking and uploading the photo.

In addition, if you plan to go out to photograph sites, be sure to take necessary health precautions and follow the guidance of national and local officials. At the end of the December, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures. The top 2 will receive monetary prizes, and the top 10 will receive certificates.

Please, keep in mind very important rules, before you upload any photo. All photos have to be you own work. All photos will be checked and compared for any match with photos available all around the web. If some photo isn't your own work, it will be permanently deleted from Commons.

What to photograph?

* independent and integrated sculptures and statues, facade reliefs, petroglyphs, geoglyphs, mosaics, digital artistic lighting;

  • murals, artistic graffiti, sculptures and art installations placed on buildings;
  • art installations, artistic transit stations;
  • ephemeral i.e. non-permanent installations and public exhibitions including performances and temporary installations
  • artistic tourist attractions
  • cemeteries of prominent and notable people
  • military cemeteries and memorial architecture, roadsides, monuments
  • old cemeteries as a whole
  • columbaria
  • gardens of memory

Judging

Criteria

Through the month of December, a jury from Serbia will go through and judge all photos to determine the top-10. The following criteria are used (in no particular order):

  • Composition
  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
  • Originality;
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.

If there are any doubts about the implementation of the rules, the jury decides.

Jury

Our jury will process the images through rounds during December. At the end of this process, the jury determines the top-10. Our jury will be composed of individuals with backgrounds in art, photography, history and historical preservation, and the Wikimedia Commons.
