Raven Software is an Activision-owned video developer company located in Madison, Wisconsin in the United States of America. The studio was founded in 1990 by brothers Brian and Steve Raffel and was acquired by Activision in 1997.
In 2010, following layoffs, Raven Software became a supporting studio for the Call of Duty franchise[2]. The studio assisted the development of each main Call of Duty games.
History[]
Raven Software first involvement with the franchise began with Call of Duty: Black Ops with art design and concepts for multiplayer maps and Zombies maps such as Shangri-La[3].
After their collaboration with Treyarch on Black Ops, Raven assisted the development of each main Call of Duty game.
In 2011, they worked with Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 after the departure of half of Infinity Ward employees following the firing of Vince Zampella and Jason West. Raven worked on the online multiplayer elements for the game, including multiplayer maps.[4]
While assisting Infinity Ward and Neversoft on Call of Duty: Ghosts[5] in 2013, Raven developed in collaboration with Tencent Games, Call of Duty Online, a free-to-play game created exclusively for China. A closed beta was released that year and an open and more stable version was officialy released on January 2015[6].
In 2016, Raven Software worked on remastering Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and became the lead studio on the project with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. The next year, Raven partnered with Sledgehammer Games to create the War Mode for Call of Duty: WWII. [7]
On March 9th, 2020, Call of Duty: Warzone was announced in collaboration with Infinity Ward, a free-to-play Battle Royale game and would be released the following day on March 10th, 2020.
On August 4th, 2020, Raven Software confirmed that they were developing the next major Call of Duty title, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War alongside Treyarch. [8]
Raven Software announced Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 on September 15th, 2022 at Call of Duty NEXT and would later be released in collaboration with Infinity Ward on November 16th, 2022.
On June 9th, 2024, it was announced that, that year's Call of Duty title would be Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, serving as a direct sequel to the 2012 game, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, in collaboration with Treyarch.
