Qhorwyn Hoare, known as Qhorwyn the Cunning, was a King of the Iron Islands from House Hoare.
Character
Qhorwyn was shrewd and avaricious.[1]
History
Qhorwyn was a shrewd King of the Iron Islands who avoided war and instead gathered wealth during his reign. He tripled the size of House Hoare's fleets and ordered the creation of additional armament to dissuade enemies from attacking.[1]
Qhorwyn's eldest son died of greyscale. When his third son, Harwyn, returned to the Iron Islands from adventuring two years later, Qhorwyn was dying. The king's middle son, Prince Harlan Hoare, died after falling from a horse while Qhorwyn was lying ill. Though it was said to be an accident, Harlan's death was considered suspicious by some, especially when King Qhorwyn passed six days later.[1]
Harwyn succeeded Qhorwyn as king, and the Hardhand soon used his father's strengthened military to conquer the riverlands from House Durrandon of the stormlands[1] and become the first King of the Isles and the Rivers.[2]
Quotes
War is bad for trade. Weakness invites attack. To have peace, we must be strong.[1]

Behind the Scenes
Qhorwyn and his son Harwyn may have been inspired by King Frederick William I of Prussia and his son Frederick II. Frederick William reformed and expanded the Prussian military, and Frederick the Great conquered Silesia soon after coming to the throne.
