Maester Harmune has read and written the correspondence for Cotter Pyke, the illiterate commander of Eastwatch,[4] for years.[1]

A Dance with Dragons
Harmune accompanies Cotter Pyke when he sails from Eastwatch with eleven ships to rescue free folk at Hardhome.[4]
From Talon, Harmune sends Jon Snow, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, a message that most of the ships are lost and that he, Cotter, and most of the crew are stranded and they need rescue. His report mentions that the living dead are all over the area.[5]
