Bellegere Otherys, also known as the Black Pearl of Braavos, was a smuggler, trader, occasional pirate, and the captain of the Widow Wind.[1]

Appearance

Bellegere is said to have been "as black as a pot of ink".[2]

History

Bellegere was born of the union between the son of a Sealord of Braavos and a Summer Islander princess.[1][2][N 1]

After Princess Naerys Targaryen almost died in 161 AC after giving birth, King Baelor I Targaryen sent her husband, Prince Aegon Targaryen, to Braavos on a diplomatic mission. Aegon met Bellegere in the Free City. The Black Pearl's ensuing affair with the prince continued for ten years, though it was said that she had a husband in every port and that Aegon was one of many.[1]

Family

Bellegere gave birth to three children during the decade, two girls and a boy of doubtful paternity: Bellenora, Narha, and Balerion Otherys.[1] Bellenora became a famous courtesan under the name the Black Pearl of Braavos, and her descendants continued the tradition, until today's Black Pearl, who is also named Bellegere.[4][5]

Quotes

The first Black Pearl was a pirate queen. A Westerosi prince took her for a lover and got a daughter on her, who grew up to be a courtesan. Her own daughter followed her, and her daughter after her, until you get to this one.[4]

Notes

  1. In earlier prints of The World of Ice & Fire, Maester Yandel erroneously claims Bellegere's parents were the daughter of a Braavosi merchant and an envoy from the Summer Isles, but that is not correct.[3] This has been corrected in later prints.
