Culture
Begging brothers often wear robes of undyed wool belted with hempen ropes.[1] While septons wear a crystal about their neck on a leather thong, begging brothers instead have a bowl.[2][3]
History
Begging brothers spread word of the liberation of the riverlands from House Durrandon after the battle at Fairmarket, but House Hoare then claimed the region for themselves.[4]
The Poor Fellows were similar to begging brothers, but they wielded axes instead of bowls.[5] The Poor Fellows and their knightly counterparts, the Warrior's Sons, were outlawed by King Maegor I Targaryen during the Faith Militant uprising.[6]
When a begging brother preached against Dreamfyre residing at Fair Isle, Lord Marq Farman had him imprisoned in the dungeon of Faircastle, where the preacher eventually died.[7] Humble begging brothers opposed House Targaryen's practice of polygamy,[6] so the Seven Speakers espoused the Doctrine of Exceptionalism to change their minds.[8]
During the Dance of the Dragons, the Shepherd was a begging brother who preached against Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen.[9]

A Clash of Kings
At Cobbler's Square in King's Landing, Tyrion Lannister sees a begging brother prophesizing about the red comet.[1] When one prophet preaches that Ser Jaime Lannister had murdered the rightful king, Aerys II Targaryen, Queen Regent Cersei Lannister has Vylarr take six prophets to the dungeons.[10]
Lord Varys disguises himself as a begging brother when coming to see Tyrion at Shae's manse.[2]
A Feast for Crows
During her search for Sansa Stark, Brienne of Tarth passes groups of begging brothers on the Rosby road, with some having joined the sparrows.[3]
Brothers with begging bowls pray at the Great Sept of Baelor while Ser Jaime holds a vigil for his father, Lord Tywin Lannister.[11]
