Begging brothers are mendicant holy men who serve the Faith of the Seven.

Culture

Begging brothers often wear robes of undyed wool belted with hempen ropes.[1] While septons wear a crystal about their neck on a leather thong, begging brothers instead have a bowl.[2][3]

History

Begging brothers spread word of the liberation of the riverlands from House Durrandon after the battle at Fairmarket, but House Hoare then claimed the region for themselves.[4]

The Poor Fellows were similar to begging brothers, but they wielded axes instead of bowls.[5] The Poor Fellows and their knightly counterparts, the Warrior's Sons, were outlawed by King Maegor I Targaryen during the Faith Militant uprising.[6]

When a begging brother preached against Dreamfyre residing at Fair Isle, Lord Marq Farman had him imprisoned in the dungeon of Faircastle, where the preacher eventually died.[7] Humble begging brothers opposed House Targaryen's practice of polygamy,[6] so the Seven Speakers espoused the Doctrine of Exceptionalism to change their minds.[8]

During the Dance of the Dragons, the Shepherd was a begging brother who preached against Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen.[9]

Quotes

If you are here about those begging brothers, Tyrion, spare me your reproaches. I won't have them spreading their filthy treasons in the streets. They can preach to each other in the dungeons.[10]
